President Biden has hailed the transformation that artificial intelligence (AI) can bring to the world, but warned that companies developing AI must first “earn trust.”
“Artificial intelligence and the companies that harness its potential will transform lives around the world. There's no doubt about it,” Biden wrote on the social platform X. “But first, artificial intelligence must earn our trust.”
“I am committed to doing everything in my power to promote and demand safe, secure, reliable, and responsible innovation. This includes the use of AI-generated audio,” the President said. continued. “We urge AI companies to join us in that effort.”
His pledge comes months after a digitally altered audio was created earlier this year that appeared to show Biden urging New Hampshire voters to avoid voting in the Democratic primary. The call was the latest example of how AI can be used in the campaign as Biden and former President Trump prepare for a rematch in November.
The post also follows concerns raised by Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson, who on Monday revealed she was “shocked” and “angered” by OpenAI's rollout of a voice assistant in ChatGPT that sounds “eerily similar” to hers. She said the company's CEO Sam Altman had reached out to her about providing the voice for the AI, but she declined.
Last week, the company began demoing an assistant with Sky voice.
“When I heard the public demo, I was shocked and angry, and I couldn't believe that Mr. Altman would go after a voice so eerily similar to mine that close friends and the press couldn't tell it apart.” '' she said in a statement. To The Hill.
