Recruiting in the age of artificial intelligence has become increasingly complex, with recruiters facing an overwhelming influx of low-effort applications generated using AI tools.

Raj Vikramaditya, founder of takeUforward, recently highlighted this growing concern, noting that despite a surge in job openings, the quality of job applications has significantly declined. While sharing his observations, he noted that this issue is not unique to his organization, but reflects broader hiring trends across the industry.

He said the company continues to receive a large number of applications, but few candidates stand out. He said the current hiring environment is full of “noise” and it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify truly talented people.

Vikramaditya cited his recent hiring experience for a user experience (UX) role at his company to illustrate the problem. After narrowing down the candidates to a shortlist based on their resumes, a concerning pattern emerged during the evaluation stage. The majority of submissions appeared to be copied or heavily assisted by AI, lacking originality, effort, or clear understanding of the challenge.

He pointed out that even candidates who have made it past the initial selection stage lack basic preparation. He said many submissions contained minimal personal opinion or research, raising questions about the authenticity of the work presented.

Of the 35 shortlisted candidates, only one submission reflected true effort and originality. That candidate ultimately secured the role, but the remaining candidates failed to live up to expectations.

This incident highlights a major new challenge in recruitment. While AI has made it easier for candidates to apply for jobs, it has also made it much harder for employers to distinguish between automated responses and actual competency.
