We've been looking at new dashcam footage showing the early stages of Sunday's attack on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia.

The video, shot from a moving vehicle, shows a man in a purple shirt confronting one of the attackers (Sajid Akram) next to a Hyundai Elantra hatchback and seizing his firearm. Another bystander also appears to be involved.

As the film car passes by, the shot cuts to a rear-view dashcam, where a black-and-white flag can be seen raised on the Hyundai's windshield. The man in the purple shirt still has a weapon at this point.

BBC Monitoring's jihadist media correspondent Mina al-Rami identified the flag as that of 'Uqab, which is most commonly associated with Muslim jihadist groups, particularly the so-called Islamic State group (IS).

No signs of AI manipulation were detected in the footage.

The end of the clip shows a man in a purple shirt getting shot, and is also captured in a longer video showing most of the attack unfolding.

The video below contains distressing content.

The video then cuts to a final aerial shot, showing the bodies of the two witnesses lying next to the car. Australian media identified them as Boris Gourman and Sofia Gourman.

We have been in contact with the person who uploaded the dashcam footage, who said in a social media post that the media was “not reporting enough on this bravery” shown by the couple.
