Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 network Base has launched a new tool that allows artificial intelligence agents to interact directly with users’ cryptocurrency wallets and decentralized finance applications through plain language prompts, marking a new step in the convergence of AI and crypto infrastructure.
The product, called Base MCP, connects your Base account to AI clients such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor using Model Context Protocol (MCP), a new standard that allows AI systems to securely connect with external tools and applications.
This integration will allow users to ask AI agents to transfer funds, exchange tokens, check balances, review transaction history, and interact with DeFi applications on Base without having to navigate traditional crypto interfaces.
“Base MCP is the first step toward easing the use of the on-chain economy through AI,” the company said in a statement. “Rather than forcing users to navigate between apps, parse protocol interfaces, and figure out exactly what action to take, Base MCP allows agents to navigate the ecosystem in a more personalized and understandable way.”
The announcement comes as cryptocurrency companies increasingly experiment with agent systems that can autonomously execute blockchain transactions and interact with decentralized applications. Industry proponents argue that AI agents have the potential to simplify onboarding to cryptocurrencies by abstracting away the complexity of wallet management and protocol navigation.
At launch, Base MCP includes integration with several DeFi protocols on top of Base, including lending platforms Morpho and Moonwell, decentralized exchange Uniswap, and perpetual trading platform Avantis.
This integration allows users to interact with lending markets, fund their vaults, manage their liquidity positions, and trade perpetual futures through a conversational AI interface rather than a dedicated app or website.
Base framed the effort as part of a broader push towards AI-native internet interfaces, arguing that chat-based agents could eventually become the primary way for on-chain applications to be discovered and used.
“Over time, we believe the agent chat interface will become an important vehicle for app discovery and distribution,” the company said in a press release. “As more people use agents as their primary internet interface, apps will need new ways to be displayed within those environments.”
