Dhaka – Bangladesh has launched the first government-run, shareable cloud computing facility powered by high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs), aimed at accelerating higher education, research, and machine learning-based skills development.
GPUs are specialized processors designed to handle massively parallel computations, making them particularly efficient for artificial intelligence and deep learning tasks compared to the traditional central processing units used in most computers.
Faiz Ahmad Tayeb, Special Assistant to the Principal Adviser, Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, said in a Facebook post today that the Bangladesh Hi-Tech Parks Authority (BHTPA) has integrated over 20 NVIDIA Volta Architecture Tensor Core GPUs into its cloud resource management platform to bring the facility up and running.
He described it as the first shared cloud facility of its kind in the public sector.
According to the post, the infrastructure will be maintained by the National Data Center team of Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC).
The platform is expected to support a wide range of high performance computing (HPC) activities, including machine learning-based dataset training, threat intelligence analysis, and geoscience modeling.
Based on the specifications, one GPU can provide the equivalent of approximately 45 CPUs of computing power, giving the platform a total of 900 CPUs of computing power, the post said.
Overall, the shared cloud can provide up to 2,240 TeraFLOPS of deep learning capacity.
TeraFLOPS is a unit of measurement for computing speed, 1 trillion floating point calculations per second, and is commonly used to describe AI and supercomputing performance.
This facility will enable users to run small-scale AI model simulations, train models, and perform inference testing, the process of evaluating how a trained AI model performs on new data.
