AWS strengthens collaboration with SAP with new AI and migration tools

AWS announced new integration with SAP aimed at accelerating customers’ migration to cloud platforms and expanding the use of AI tools with SAP data and systems.

This update includes software code modernization, migration orchestration, private network connectivity, and data access for analytics and AI applications. They are aimed at companies that are moving their SAP workloads to the cloud, as well as those already running SAP systems on AWS.

One of the key additions is support for AWS AI coding assistants, including Kiro, using SAP’s ABAP Model Context protocol. AWS says this will help developers modernize SAP code, which is often a large part of migration projects.

AWS and SAP are adding automated orchestration to RISE using SAP System Transition Workbench. According to AWS, this is one of the first examples of an SAP migration tool that directly coordinates data transfer for a cloud provider’s native service in some file-based migration scenarios.

Another update focuses on network connectivity. SAP Seamless Private Connectivity using AWS Resource Gateway is expected to reduce the need for redesigns and workarounds when linking existing infrastructure to your SAP environment, reducing network setup time from weeks to days.

Partner role

Consulting groups are also building services based on new approaches. Accenture has developed what AWS calls an agent-driven delivery platform on top of Amazon Bedrock to automate issue triage, integration mapping, and data migration validation.

This announcement also includes SAP Business Data Cloud Connect for Amazon Athena. The product provides two-way, zero-copy access to live SAP data, allowing businesses to use that information for analytics and AI tools without moving or duplicating datasets.

For customer service, Amazon Connect Customer integrates with SAP Service Cloud and SAP Enterprise Service Management. This allows organizations to use AI agents across customer channels while linking those tools to SAP service systems.

Another integration supports model context protocols in Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. This enables customers to connect AI agents to SAP ERP systems through the SAP Integration Suite, allowing these agents to access SAP business data through a protocol-based connectivity model.

The move comes as large SAP users continue to migrate core business applications from on-premises systems to public cloud platforms. These projects are often long-running, requiring code changes, data migration, and network redesign while simultaneously impacting finance, supply chain, manufacturing, and customer operations.

According to AWS, thousands of organizations run SAP on their cloud, and more than half have deployed SAP Cloud ERP. ISG also said it has been recognized as a leader in SAP HANA infrastructure services for five consecutive years and currently offers a 99.95% service level agreement for RISE with SAP workloads.

AWS plans to make more SAP Business Data Cloud, GROW, and SAP Business Technology Platform services available in additional AWS Regions. This is important for customers in regulated sectors and companies that want to bring their systems closer to local operation and reduce latency.

AI focus

This broader strategy reflects growing efforts by cloud providers to connect AI services to large enterprise software assets. For SAP customers, this typically means using operational and transactional data from ERP and service systems in analytics, automation, and customer support tools after workloads run in the cloud.

AWS pointed to examples of early customers in automotive and manufacturing. Hyundai uses Amazon Quick and SAP-related operational data, and Mercedes-Benz uses AI-based analytics extracted from SAP data in its manufacturing and customer experience operations.

AWS also highlighted the SAP and AWS AI joint innovation program. The program works with partners like Accenture, Capgemini, Cognizant, and Deloitte to help customers identify and move AI use cases into production.

This announcement shows how the competition for SAP workloads is expanding beyond infrastructure to migration services, data access, and AI tools. For cloud providers, its value lies not only in hosting large enterprise systems, but also in being a platform for businesses to build new applications and automation on top of their SAP assets.

According to AWS, customers can now connect their existing infrastructure to their SAP RISE environments in days instead of weeks.
