Autonomous agents – AI-driven programs that can be thought of without human input – can unleash a new world of e-commerce in Ethereum, as the HTTP web standard, which is just beginning to be leveraged on blockchain, is heavily forgotten.
Dormant HTTP 402 “Payment Request” Status – defined about 30 years ago – along with Ethereum Improvement Proposal 3009, AI agents allow them to be stylized without human intervention.
The pair said autonomous agents could become “the biggest power user” of Ethereum on X-Post. According to the GitHub account, Coinbase has already implemented HTTP 402 via “X402 Payments Protocol.”
AI agents can become transformative as AI agents now have autonomous access to funds to remove the need for human intervention in managing API calls, storage, or calculations.
From self-driving taxis that cover their own costs, to AI models that use Stablecoins to automatically generate content using Stablecoins to store data forever, it could make everything possible, the pair said.
In a limited way, AI agents are already trading crypto by analyzing market data, performing sales orders and optimizing portfolios in real time without human intervention.
As easy as a vending machine
Leffew and Murr compared the process to the vending machine process and explained that the AI agent receives an HTTP 402 request, signs the transaction, and makes payments to get a response.

It essentially transformed the API into a wallet-conscious service, they said.
“One round trip. Like a vending machine. No account required.”
Ethereum is perfect for HTTP 402
Leffew and Murr said Ethereum's unreliable payments layer will become the ideal blockchain for HTTP 402 implementations, making invoices and dispute chargebacks much more efficient than traditional processes.
“They need an atom payment, a programmable policy, and a configurable wallet. Ethereum and stubcoin give just that.”
AI Agent is already leveraged via HTTP 402, EIP 3009
The developers are already experimenting with HTTP 402, Coinbase workers say they are pointing to the hyperbolic lab and implementing its large-scale language model to generate image and video media content in Prodia Labs.
“The magic of the X402 is that it not only allows agents to pay, but also allows services to autonomously take them into a completely economic loop,” concluded Leffew and Murr.
