BEIJING (Kyodo) – At the Beijing Auto Show, which opened Friday, major automakers from around the world are showcasing their latest electric vehicle models and applications of artificial intelligence, with green cars gaining attention amid soaring gasoline prices sparked by the U.S.-Israel war with Iran.

Approximately 1,450 cars will be on display at the biennial event, which runs until May 3, with approximately 180 models making their world debut. According to the organizers, the exhibition area will be 380,000 square meters, one of the largest in the world.

In China, the world’s largest automobile market, new energy vehicles such as EVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles will account for approximately 50% of new car sales by 2025.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. will unveil two new concept cars as Japanese automakers struggle in the Chinese market due to fierce competition from local automakers.

Honda will not hold a press conference during the auto show as an unusual measure as sales continue to decline in the Chinese market.

In addition to Toyota Motor Corporation, other companies participating in the event include major Chinese EV manufacturer BYD and technology giant Xiaomi.
