Congress spokesperson Supriya Srinath called the Bharatiya Janata Party a “mass murderer” and said filming a video was not enough. “The Bharatiya Janata Party’s true identity is a mass murderer. Mr. Modi, this venom, hatred and violence is upon you. Are the courts and other institutions asleep?” she said in X.

Journalist Rana Ayyub said the video depicts the stripping of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s top leadership.

“I hate to amplify this, but it only exposes the corruption from above. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Twitter handle is sharing a meme of Himanta Biswa firing at Muslims as PM Modi talks about his great welcome in Muslim-majority Malaysia,” she said in a post on X.

The video was released as the Assam CM comes under fire for a series of “hate speeches” against Assam’s Bengali-speaking Muslim community.

Regarding the special revision of Assam’s electoral roll, Himanta said that “400,000 to 500,000 Miya voters” would be removed from the electoral roll, adding that his job was to “make them suffer”.

Miya is a derogatory term for Bengali-speaking Muslims of Assam.

“What kind of ‘voting chori'” [vote theft] Does it make sense to us? Yes, we are trying to steal Miya’s vote. Ideally, they should not be allowed to vote in Assam. They should be able to vote in Bangladesh as well,” Sarma said.

He previously said that notices regarding the revision of the electoral roll were only served on Mr Miyas.

“Which Hindus are being served notices? Which Assamese Muslims are being served notices? Notices are being delivered to Miyas and people like them. Otherwise they will pass over our heads,” he said.

The comments sparked outrage from all quarters, with rights activist and lawyer Harsh Mander filing a police complaint against the state chief minister and Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind filing a complaint in the Supreme Court, saying the comments were communal and unconstitutional and tantamount to hate speech by a person holding a high constitutional office.
