Jim Hendler is a data scientist with special interests in open government and scientific data, healthcare data science, AI and machine learning, semantic data integration, and the use of data in government.
One of the founders of the Semantic Web, Hendler has written more than 450 books, technical papers, and articles in the areas of open data, the Semantic Web, artificial intelligence, and data policy and governance. He is also a former principal investigator in the Information Systems Directorate of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and was awarded the U.S. Air Force Distinguished Civilian Service Medal in 2002. He is the first computer scientist to serve on the review and editorial board of Science magazine. In 2010, Hendler was named an “Internet Web Expert” by the U.S. government and helped develop and launch the US data.gov open data website.
Jim Hendler was appointed New York State’s Open Data Advisor in 2013 and a member of the U.S. Homeland Security Science and Technology Advisory Council in 2015. In 2016, he became a member of the National Academies Committee on Research Data and Information, in 2017 he became a member of the Director’s Advisory Board of the PNNL National Security Directorate, and in 2021 he became chair of ACM’s Global Technology Policy Council. Hendler is a Fellow of the American Academy of Public Administration, AAAI, AAAS, ACM, BCS, and IEEE.
