“Artificial intelligence (AI) reduces existing working hours and allows lawyers to not only resolve issues afterwards, but also prevent problems that may arise in advance.”
Amid the rapid adoption of AI in the Korean legal market, Lim Jung-Geun, CEO of BHSN, the startup that leads Korean legal AI, recently met with the email business and said, “Thanks to AI, humans do important tasks with higher value added.” In the future, AI-armed lawyers will expand into more active roles.
But he said, “AI is not a role in determining and solving problems. People need to identify many nonverbal factors, such as emotions, in legal matters.
BHSN is an AI Legal Tech startup, and its representative company-to-business representative (B2B) solution “Alibi” automatically reviews and analyzes contracts and various legal documents to quickly identify key clauses and detect potential risks ahead of time. This is not an easy solution for lawyers, but it has recently been used as an all-in-one business solution for businesses, as it can be used not only by legal teams but also by general office employees. It is already actively used by major national conglomerates such as SK Telecom and CJ Cheiljedang.
CEO Lim worked as a lawyer at the law firm Yulchon before BHSN was founded. He performed many M&A tasks for foreign companies and had difficulty investigating foreign regulatory policies one by one in the process of writing contracts. Taking this experience as an opportunity, I decided that there were many problems that could be solved in the B2B area if AI was combined, so I quit my job as a lawyer in 2020 and started BHSN. He focused on developing AI models that were specialized for laws such as guidelines and policies rather than general AI models, achieving results in a short period of time.
In addition to CEO Lim, there are many lawyers within the company who use real, validated, reliable data to carry out model learning.
“The learning process uses copyright-free data from public institutions, with internal lawyers responsible for data generation, verification and inspection.” “Through this thoroughly verified “Alibi,” companies have experienced over 50% productivity gains,” he said. “For example, when you set up a pricing policy or business strategy, you can predict government regulations or policy changes in advance and reflect them in your business plan, which will greatly improve your work efficiency.”
BHSN's solutions expand the scope of their support by studying not only Korean laws but also foreign laws such as Japan and Southeast Asia. Such expansions have attracted attention as they have produced practical results to help Korean companies solve the language barriers they encounter in overseas markets.
Asked about BHSN's competitiveness in overseas laws, the CEO said, “Of course, there are many related B2B services created by US companies, but most of them are limited to US regulatory policies. In particular, it is difficult for US companies to deal with. While chatbots created in the US can read Korean, CEO Lim explains how their influence on certain laws should be seen in detail from a variety of perspectives, as a company reflects their culture.
“Like we developed a specialized model in the legal field, further specialising in detailed areas such as finance, real estate, and taxation will improve accuracy and broaden the scope,” the CEO said. “My dream is not only to help businesses create more business opportunities by continuously upgrading their solutions in this direction in the future, but ultimately contributing to the development of society as a whole.”
