AI For Business


A new national survey of small business owners reveals that the age of artificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept. It is actively using or investigating AI tools to signal the sector on the brink of technological change, according to a new study by Reimagine Main Street, which partners with Paypal.

A report that surveyed around 1,000 small business owners and included 20 in-depth interviews shows that AI adoption is happening now. But while many people are soaking their toes in generative AI, the findings reveal a deeper desire for a new class of intelligent tools.

Current Status: AI as a Time-Saving Assistant

Small businesses are ready for AI to not only help but act.

For 25% of SMEs who are active AI users, AI is already embedded in their daily operations. We use AI to generate marketing content, handle customer service inquiries, and increase productivity.

Core Value Proposals are clear: Time savings. Jodi F., owner of HR consulting and recruiting companies, pointed out how AI translates workflows. “I used it [AI] To respond to the letter this afternoon…but I added my own personal touch,” she said.

This efficiency is more than just convenience. It is becoming necessary. The overwhelming 82% of small business owners surveyed believe that adopting AI is essential to staying competitive and that if not, they are left behind.

Next leap: Demand for AI agents to drive growth

While generative AI today is useful for viewing and content, research has revealed that small businesses aren't just looking for creative assistants. They are looking for digital partners that can drive profitable growth.

Of the active AI users surveyed:

  • Over half (53%) said that a cash flow predictor tool will solve “important issues.”
  • Four tenths are “very likely” to employ tools that dynamically adjust pricing and promotions to promote sales.
  • Another 45% are keen on tools to predict future revenue trends to help with key decisions regarding staffing, inventory and marketing.

Overcoming the barriers to adoption

All kinds of small businesses are ready for agent commerce.

Despite clear momentum, half of the SME communities surveyed remain on the sidelines. They experiment with AI tools and are intrigued, but are reluctant to commit completely. Their best barriers are resolveable but important.

Data privacy and security concerns were frequently published. “We don't know how the data is being used. So, from a business perspective, if it's information about our company, we want to ensure that it's not just for everyone to use it, but also for us,” says Firdaws A., which owns a beverage company.

Furthermore, the burden of trying to learn how to use yet another new tool becomes heavy. As Melissa H., owner of the tea room business, explained, “The learning curve must be really low. Again, there's no time to lunch or drink water.

How PayPal meets at this moment

PayPal is developing tools designed to accelerate the vision of Agent Commerce and fill this gap. The strategy focuses on incorporating autonomous, autonomous capabilities directly into the PayPal ecosystem already used and trusted by millions of small businesses. The study examines this approach, saying 83% of all SMEs say they welcome AI if they are integrated into the tools and solutions they already use.

The data is clear. Small and medium-sized businesses are ready for AI to not only help but act. They envision a future in which technology not only provides insights, but also focuses on doing it on them, releasing owners and doing what they do best.
