For decades, consulting firms have sold advice by the hour. A number of junior staff members produced large volumes of research, created slide decks, and synthesized information for senior executives.
Now, artificial intelligence is quietly rewriting that strategy.
At companies like McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group, and Deloitte, AI has gone from a buzzword to an essential tool. Consultants use it to write code, analyze data, draft presentations, and even build agents that can complete tasks autonomously.
McKinsey & Company CEO Bob Sternfels said the company currently has 25,000 AI agents and 40,000 employees and aims to reach a 1:1 ratio within the next 18 months. BCG has built thousands of custom GPTs for internal and customer use and is leaning toward evaluating how employees use them.
But as AI becomes part of everyday consulting work, the question is no longer whether the industry will change, but to what extent and who will benefit most from that change.
