Apple is reportedly not planning to make any hardware announcements at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2024. The annual developer event, which begins on June 10, is traditionally where Apple shows off its latest innovations, but this year it's expected to focus solely on software advancements and not feature any new hardware.
The Cupertino-based company doesn't plan to announce any new hardware during the conference, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg's Power On newsletter. Gurman specifically said that no surprise device previews or announcements are expected, denying previous speculation about the arrival of a next-generation Apple TV.
Previously, there had been high hopes for a new Apple TV, rumoured to have an improved processor and a more affordable price point, and the device was initially expected to launch in the first half of 2024. However, Gurman now suggests that the release of this updated Apple TV is not imminent.
At WWDC 2024, Apple is expected to announce updates to the operating systems that power its various devices, including iOS for iPhones, iPadOS for iPads, and macOS for Macs. One of the big highlights is expected to be iOS 18, which may integrate significant artificial intelligence (AI) enhancements.
Among the expected upgrades is a more intelligent version of Apple's voice assistant, Siri, which is rumored to gain the ability to ask follow-up questions without having to repeat information to the user. Additionally, there are reports that Apple will partner with OpenAI to incorporate the company's advanced AI technology, including its ChatGPT conversational chatbot, into the Apple ecosystem.
Gurman also said that iOS 18 may introduce AI-driven custom emojis, expanding beyond the current emoji library. Additionally, users may have more freedom to customize their home screen layouts, allowing for a more personalized user experience.
Despite these leaks and rumors, Apple has a long-standing tradition of keeping its announcements closely guarded until its official keynote, so the full extent of what Apple has planned for WWDC 2024 will only become clear once the event gets underway.
