Bloomberg's Mark Gernman reported that Apple and OpenAI began talks toward a deal earlier this year, but work since then has been minimal. According to reports, Apple and OpenAI are in talks to enhance chatbot-like features in iOS 18.

Meanwhile, Apple is also in talks with Google to license the Gemini AI chatbot. The report states that Apple may ultimately reach an agreement with both OpenAI and Google, or choose one chatbot vendor.

According to previous reports, Apple is also in talks with Baidu to provide generative AI capabilities to Chinese users, as Google is not present in China.

Apple's iOS 18 is being touted as one of the iPhone maker's “biggest” software updates ever. Like every year, Apple is likely to announce the iOS 18 operating system at the Worldwide Developers Conference, and the new update could be first introduced to the upcoming iPhone 16 series later this year.

Gernman also recently revealed in the Power On Newsletter that Apple is working on developing a completely on-device large-scale language model (LLM). This means that it is powered by the processor inside your phone, rather than running from the cloud. The use of an on-device model means that AI chatbots are more powerful and less knowledgeable than most commercial chatbots such as his ChatGPT and Gemini, which are backed by huge servers and trained with billions of parameters.
