Apple recently criticized EU regulators over its new initiative to give Google access to rival AI chatbots.
The Alphabet-owned company on Wednesday echoed Google’s criticism of EU antitrust regulators’ efforts to force search giants to access the services of AI rivals, warning that the proposed measures pose risks to privacy, security and safety.
Apple last month responded to a European Commission call for feedback on draft measures to help Google comply with digital markets laws aimed at curbing the power of Big Tech.
Google said the proposal, which would allow competing AI services to work with Android apps to send emails, order food and share photos, would undermine important privacy and security protections for European users.
Apple, which is also subject to the EU’s proposals to open up its ecosystem, said it had a keen interest in the case given its proprietary operating systems for iPhones, iPads and Mac computers, highlighting the broader implications for how its platform must handle third-party AI access.
“The DM raises urgent and serious concerns. If confirmed, it would pose significant risks to user privacy, security, and safety, as well as the integrity and performance of devices,” Apple said in a filing.
“These risks are particularly acute in the context of rapidly evolving AI systems whose functionality, behavior, and threat vectors remain unpredictable, as we are seeing time and time again today,” the report said.
Additionally, iPhone and Mac manufacturers also questioned the technical expertise and objectives of EU regulators.
“The EC is redesigning the OS (operating system), replacing decisions made by Google engineers with their own decisions based on less than three months of work. This is even more dangerous given that the only value discernible from the DMs guiding this work appears to be open and unfettered access.”
