By acquiring Q.ai, Apple appears to be taking a page from Meta’s strategy, which has perfected the art of using acquisitions and acquisitions to acquire important future technologies. Of course, it remains to be seen whether this is the beginning of a meta takeover drama or a one-off acquisition.

Apple buys Q.ai for $2 billion, making it one of the Cupertino giant’s most expensive acquisitions ever

According to the Financial Times, Apple acquired the secretive Israeli AI company Q.ai for $2 billion, making the deal one of Apple’s most expensive acquisitions in history.

Of course, no other deal so far has reached the size of Apple’s $3 billion acquisition of Beats in 2014. The deal laid the foundation for Apple Music and enabled the tech giant to incorporate advanced audio hardware into its ecosystem of devices.

Back to the topic, Q.ai specializes in using machine learning to decipher whispers and enhance speech in difficult situations. Apple hasn’t officially commented on the reason for this move, but it’s logical to assume it has something to do with AirPods’ new live translation feature.

Additionally, Q.ai is reportedly working on analyzing and interpreting minute facial expressions. This could come in handy given the plethora of recent reports suggesting that Apple is developing a dedicated AI pin, with initial sales projections set at 20 million units. The wearable pin is expected to be about the same size as an AirTag and will be equipped with multiple cameras, speakers, a microphone, and wireless charging.

Founded in 2022, Q.ai makes the somewhat cryptic declaration on its website: “In a world full of noise, we create a new kind of calm. We make magic happen.” It remains to be seen what kind of magic Apple can create with Q.ai’s technology.
