Antonio Torralba, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Delta Electronics and Chair of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Making at MIT, has been named a 2025 member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Fellows. He shares the honor of an ACM Fellowship with three MIT alumni. George Candea ’97, Meng ’98; and Kukwon Edward Soo SM 2001, Ph.D. 2005.
Mr. Torralba, a Principal Investigator at the Institute for Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence and the Center for Brains, Minds and Machines, received his Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications Engineering from Telecom BCN in Spain in 1994 and his PhD in Signal, Image and Audio Processing from the National Institute of Technology Grenoble in France in 2000. At various points in his MI career, he has served as director of both MIT Quests. Intelligence (now MIT Siegel Family Quest for Intelligence) and the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab.
Torralba’s research focuses on computer vision, machine learning, and human vision. He says: “I’m interested in building systems that can see the world the way humans do.” He recently co-authored “Foundations of Computer Vision” with Phillip Isola and William Freeman, a more than 800-page textbook that explores the fundamentals and core principles of the field.
Among other awards and recognition, he received the 2008 National Science Foundation Career Award. He received the 2010 JK Agarwal Award from the International Pattern Recognition Society. 2017 Frank Quick Faculty Research and Innovation Fellowship. Louis D. Smarin (’39) Award for Excellence in Teaching. and the 2020 PAMI Mark Everingham Award. In 2021, he received the inaugural Thomas Huang Memorial Award from the Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence Technology Committee and was named a Fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. In 2022, he received an honorary doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Barcelona (UPC).
ACM Fellows are the highest honor bestowed by a professional organization and are registered members of the association elected by their peers in recognition of outstanding achievement in computing and information technology and/or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community.
