Anthropik, the startup behind the artificial intelligence (AI) assistant Clode, has announced a new “tool usage” feature that could change the way businesses interact with their customers.
The new feature allows businesses to develop custom AI helpers, transforming how they manage customer support inquiries and optimizing operational processes. It's one of a growing number of AI assistants on the market. At its developer conference, Google I/O, Google unveiled a range of AI-driven features for shopping and search, while OpenAI is developing a voice assistant that can respond in real time and observe its environment.
Clode's evolution from a chatbot to a sophisticated assistant is a testament to the rapid progress being made in the field, Dmytro Shevchenko, data scientist at Aimprosoft, told PYMNTS.
“Claude has evolved from a chatbot that answers questions based on experience and data provided to it using RAG, to a tool that mimics a real-world assistant,” he added. “It can handle certain tasks like canceling an order, accessing database information, or providing the current weather forecast. Essentially, Claude knows anything you can request through our API.”
A new breed of personalized AI assistant
Potential uses for AI assistants range from email management and product recommendations to virtual shopping assistants and more. As businesses look for ways to automate processes and provide more efficient customer service, custom AI assistants could become indispensable tools.
Julia McCoy, president of AI at Content at Scale, envisions a future where companies that integrate Claude's Tool Use into their systems “can streamline customer success into faster, better experiences.” “Even searching through order data takes humans too long. AI can solve this problem 10 times faster because it works independently of the human problem. I think companies that invest in AI agent capabilities and autonomous support departments will see big gains in efficiency and profitability.”
McCoy added: “Anthropic will revolutionize the landscape with its tooling capabilities, which mimic the behavior of highly trained AI agents, and are in line with where autonomous work, the future of AI, and robotics are headed. Claude is one of the best LLMs because its developers care about security and transparency. In that respect, its work is comparable to OpenAI and Google.”
Challenges and opportunities
However, integrating Claude's tool usage into existing business systems is not without challenges.
“Complex tickets, records and systems can make it difficult for Claude to look up an order number, for example,” McCoy points out. “By streamlining their platforms and CRM, companies can ensure future tool use is implemented smoothly and effectively.”
Shevchenko detailed strategies that companies can adopt to ensure successful integration.
“The main challenge here is to create accurate descriptions for each tool, because Clode will use these descriptions to decide which tool to apply based on the user's request,” he says. “Tool descriptions must be clear enough to allow the AI model to correctly select the right tool for the task. In my opinion, the basic strategy is to create unique and accurate descriptions for each tool, clearly indicate the main purpose of each tool, and specify what data or fields the tool returns for Clode's further use.”
Despite these hurdles, Anthropic's efforts to make its toolset more accessible and user-friendly are catching attention in the industry. Muddu Sudhakar, co-founder and CEO of AI company Aisera, told PYMNTS: “The good news is that Anthropic has invested in creating a much easier to use toolset, which should encourage further development. It will make it easier for companies to experiment and find the right use cases for generative AI.”
The custom AI capabilities will be rolling out to Claude users in the coming weeks, but it remains to be seen how quickly businesses will adopt this new technology and what impact it will have on customer service and support.
However, with rapid advances in AI and the growing demand for efficient, personalized solutions, Anthropic's move could mark a major step forward in the evolution of human-AI interactions in the business world. As companies navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by this new technology, one thing is clear: the future of customer service will be transformed by the power of artificial intelligence.
