As AI companies race to embed large-scale language models deeper into regulated medical workflows, Anthropic is rolling out significant expansions to its healthcare and life sciences offerings.
The company on Sunday announced Claude for Healthcare, a product that enables healthcare providers, insurers, and consumers to use Claude for medical purposes through HIPAA-enabled infrastructure.
The launch builds on Anthropic's previous Claude for Life Sciences release, which focused on research and drug discovery, and reflects the company's broader efforts to position AI models as practical tools for regulated industries.
The move also highlights the growing competition in healthcare AI. OpenAI recently unveiled a rival product, and startups like Abridge and Sword Health are attracting billion-dollar valuations as investors pour money into medical AI tools.
Anthropic said Claude for Healthcare is designed to reduce administrative tasks and help both clinicians and patients better understand medical information. These tools are powered by recent improvements to the company's flagship model, Claude Opus 4.5, which Anthropic says has fewer factual errors and performs significantly better than previous versions on simulated medical and scientific tasks.
As part of its healthcare expansion, Claude can now connect directly to several industry standard databases. These include the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Coverage Database, ICD-10 medical coding data, the National Provider Identifier Registry, and the PubMed Biomedical Research Library. Anthropic says these connectors will allow Claude to quickly display relevant information, support pre-approval workflows, and help clinicians and administrators create reports more efficiently.
The company is also introducing customizable “agent skills.” It includes sample tools to streamline prior authorization requests and help developers build applications using FHIR, the latest standard for exchanging medical data between systems.
On the consumer side, Anthropic is rolling out an integration that will give Claude secure access to their personal health records for Pro and Max plan subscribers in the United States. New connectors include HealthEx and Function Health, and Apple HealthKit and Android Health Connect integration is launching in beta via Claude's mobile app. Anthropic said the data accessed through these integrations is not stored in Claude's memory or used to train models.
Anthropic is also expanding Claude's capabilities for life sciences customers, adding connectors to platforms such as Medidata, ClinicalTrials.gov, and bioRxiv. New agent skills will support tasks such as drafting FDA- and NIH-compliant clinical trial protocols and monitoring trial performance.
