Anthropic launches new AI model to help fight cyberattacks

Let me tell you another story. This is Anthropic’s new project. It’s called Glasswing. And this has to do with cybersecurity. We were talking about that name during a break, so I looked it up. So the name Glasswing comes from the glasswing butterfly, which uses its transparent wings to hide in plain sight. This metaphor therefore reflects the goal of this effort to expose critical software vulnerabilities that have been openly present for years but remain hidden by complex technical systems. So.

That seems about right. Well, this is basically an effort with them, Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, you name it, they’re on board there. Well, except for Open AI, just throw it out there. Um, and the idea here is to use this new kind of frontier model as a way to search for bugs that exist in software. Now, since software is created by humans, there are bound to be bugs. That’s why we come to hacking. People hack, find bugs, exploit bugs,

Hacking the system, that’s kind of how this works. Well, the idea is to use AI to run the software and see what it can find. And they said they found some that were over 20 years old, some that were over 20 years old, and some that were over 30 years old.

It’s not shocking, but you know, I said it was going to happen someday.

01:33 Speaker B

No, it’s not a shock at all. And, and they said they discovered the most popular operating systems, web browsers, plus thousands more.

Again, like you said, it’s not surprising that there are bugs in this. All software has bugs. It’s just that this is a good way to find it. This model is no longer available. They said this is about these partners working together to create these kinds of defenses and find any of these problems. They also said they are working or want to work with the U.S. government on defensive and offensive cyber capabilities. So the US government needs to see if they can find and exploit these bugs. So, you know, it’s interesting to see this announcement after Anthropic had to do something about it after the leak last week. Um, we’ve seen Meco, uh, issues with supply chain hacking. Um, so I was just talking to some people yesterday about AI and cyber security, and someone could be vibe-coding their site and not have the most technical capabilities themselves, and that could cause problems. In other words, it can also be a tool.

Well, many such things will continue to happen. Just imagine.
