AMD Instinct AI Accelerator
AMD announced the acquisition of Silo AI, the largest private AI lab in Europe. The companies have signed a definitive agreement for AMD to acquire Silo AI in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $665 million.
AMD experienced tremendous growth last year, with its Instinct MI300 family of AI accelerators reaching nearly $1 billion in sales, faster than any other product in the company's history. While this growth is obviously a welcome development, AMD remains somewhat constrained in terms of its in-house AI skillset. The acquisition of Silo AI is primarily intended to inject deep AI talent into AMD and engage with existing and new customers going forward, which will also revitalize AI software development. Based in Helsinki, Finland with operations across Europe and North America, Silo AI specializes in end-to-end AI-driven solutions that enable customers across a wide range of markets to integrate AI into their products, services and operations.
When we spoke with AMD about this deal, we were told that the company has a lot of customers that they want to connect for AI integration, but they need additional resources to do it properly. The Silo AI acquisition will add 300 new employees to AMD, including 125 AI scientists PhDs who already have extensive experience training their JDs on the AMD platform.
AMD to acquire Silo AI in all-cash deal

The Silo AI team's hiring is primarily aimed at expanding AMD's AI skillset, but the company also owns part of the AI software stack that AMD is acquiring. While the primary goal is to scale customer engagement globally, the Silo AI team will also be tasked with helping build out AMD's AI software stack. To date, most of AMD's work has been in the foundation layer of the stack, closer to the metal. But the Silo AI team will help the company start building out additional verticals and connect the AI stack from the lower levels to real-world applications.
Silo AI has trained and used some of the largest models in Europe on AMD (and other) platforms and brings a wealth of AI knowledge and experience to AMD. This acquisition should enable AMD to accelerate and rapidly expand its software efforts, as well as better collaborate with new and existing customers looking to build advanced AI integrations.
