Amazon is investing $10 billion to create a data center in North Carolina aimed at expanding artificial intelligence and cloud computing technology capabilities.
The move, announced Wednesday, is the latest attempt to compete with Google and Microsoft in the artificial intelligence field. It will also significantly increase its state presence, creating at least 500 new, sophisticated jobs, ranging from data center engineers and network specialists to engineering operations managers and security specialists.
“This investment supports it [Trump] “We're committed to creating a new and exciting new environment for our customers,” said Shannon Kellogg, Amazon's Vice President of Public Policy.

The investment will also support thousands of other jobs in the Amazon Web Services Data Center supply chain, the company said.
“Generative AI is driving the increased demand for advanced cloud infrastructure and compute power, and our investments support the future of AI from AWS data centers in Tar Heel,” Amazon said in a blog post. “This deployment of this cutting-edge cloud computing infrastructure will strengthen its position as North Carolina's innovation hub.”

Amazon is competing to invest in artificial intelligence infrastructure. In January, Amazon Web Services announced plans to invest an estimated $11 billion to expand Georgia's infrastructure. Large tech companies have invested hundreds of billions of dollars in AI.

According to Jassy, leveraging this technology is one way to stay competitive.

“If the customer experience is not planning to leverage these intelligent models, the ability to query huge corpus of data and quickly find needles in the haystack, the ability to continue to be smarter with more feedback and data, and the future agent capabilities are not competitive,” he writes.
