Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday announced the addition of AI-generated video summaries to help viewers catch up between seasons of some TV shows. The feature uses generative artificial intelligence to create videos for select Prime Originals, including Fallout, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and Upload, and will begin rolling out in beta on the same day.
Video Recap produces theatrical-quality season summaries that incorporate synchronized narration, dialogue, and music. Amazon describes the technology as one that “leverages generative AI to create theatrical-quality season summaries with synchronized narration, dialogue, and music.” This approach aims to provide a consistent audiovisual experience tailored to allow viewers to refresh their memories of previous plot developments and character arcs without having to rewatch entire episodes or seasons.
Last year, Prime Video introduced a companion AI-powered tool known as X-Ray Recaps. This feature provides text summaries of complete seasons, individual episodes, or specific segments within an episode. At launch, Amazon emphasized that the underlying AI model includes guardrails designed to avoid spoilers, ensuring that summaries do not reveal future story developments, only important previous events.
Text-based AI summaries have become a common element in many consumers’ daily digital interactions. For example, your smartphone automatically generates summaries of long text messages, condensing conversations into key points. Similarly, in Google search results, AI-generated summaries often appear at the top of the page, providing quick insights into the queried topic. While these formats deliver information efficiently, they are still limited to written content and differ from the immersive video style of Prime Video’s new compilations. Prime Video’s new compilations integrate visual and audio components directly into the streaming interface, which can result in more noticeable interruptions to the viewing flow during playback.
Other streaming services are incorporating generative AI in different ways. YouTube TV uses Key Plays to let viewers jump in to live sports broadcasts. The tool identifies and highlights important moments, such as key plays, in an ongoing game, allowing users to instantly understand the current score and momentum. In baseball, the algorithm primarily focuses on key offensive plays, which creates some limitations in coverage. This innovation earned YouTube TV the inaugural Technical Emmy Award for Advancement in Sports Viewing Technology.
Netflix primarily applies generative AI during content production rather than user-facing features. In the Argentinian series “The Eternaut,” released earlier this year, the platform used AI to generate footage depicting a building collapse during a key scene, marking the first time Netflix had integrated such technology into the final onscreen material. For Happy Gilmore 2, the producers utilized generative AI to change the appearance of the characters, making them look younger in the film’s opening sequence to suit the requirements of the story. Additionally, during pre-production on Billionaires’ Bunker, AI tools were used to conceptualize wardrobe elements and set design, streamlining the creative team’s visualization process.
The integration of AI tools across the film and television industry has sparked debate among experts. Artists have raised concerns about generative models being trained on their work without permission, and see this practice as a potential risk to employment opportunities in creative fields. In contrast, proponents emphasize how AI accelerates iterative processes in areas such as animation and special effects. Tools like Wonder Dynamics exemplify this by automating labor-intensive tasks, thereby increasing the overall output capabilities of visual artists.
