The eight-minute video, titled “In Her Greatness,” uses Alibaba's cloud-based AI to colorize and restore archival photos of female athletes' achievements from past Olympic Games, including an image of French tennis star Suzanne Lenglen, who won gold medals in the women's singles and mixed doubles at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics.
“'To the Greatness of HER' highlights the incredible strides women have made in sports throughout history,” said Bach. “I'm incredibly grateful to our friends at Alibaba for using AI technology to bring the achievements of women in sports to light in all its glory. More importantly, the film calls attention to one of the Olympic community's top priorities: empowering women in and through sports. Gender equality is a team sport; we all have a role to play and must lead by example. With this film, Alibaba is leading by example, using its technological expertise to highlight this important theme.”
The film also features interviews with pioneering athletes such as Morocco's Nawal El Mutawakel, the first woman from a Muslim country to win an Olympic medal, and China's Zhang Shan, who made history by winning gold in the mixed skeet shooting event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
