Are you disillusioned with politics? Perhaps because I think politicians don't listen to us anyway and are always breaking election promises? It is worth seeing the European country where the government has taken an astonishing step forward afterwards. For the first time in the world, AI has been appointed as a minister of the country!
Diera (Albanian for “Sun”) is the name of an AI chatbot that previously worked on the Albanian government portal. But now there was a promotion that perhaps the smartest AI on the planet could not foresee. Diera was the first artificial intelligence officially appointed to the Ministerial Office. In the future, the virtual minister will be responsible for public bids. This is an area that has repeatedly attracted attention in the Balkan country due to corruption and lack of transparency.
Fighting against corruption with AI
Prime Minister Eddie Rama – not without controversy – Diera presented as “rotten, transparent and transparent.” AI must award contracts more fairly than human politicians. At the same time, we need to ensure that human influence is minimized. In this way, the Albanian government hopes to regain confidence in the state's procedures.
However, it is still unclear whether this step will actually provide greater transparency as questions remain unanswered. First critics have already questioned how AI can work independently in an environment where political domination and power structures continue to exist. The question of who will accurately be responsible for programming and who will review the decision in the end remains unanswered.
Looking at the world, I find myself in many countries with great dissatisfaction with politics. We know this from many European countries. There, people are taking the government more and more to the streets. In the US, we even question whether democracy itself is still safe, and we can list more countries than we have grown frustration.
Can AI reduce disillusionment with politics?
So it's a legitimate question about how to once again convince people that politics can improve things for the benefit of the citizens. At the same time, questions arise as to whether artificial intelligence could be the perfect answer. Can politicians regain trust through technology that also struggles with lack of trust in a part of the population?
This problem needs to be addressed as AI is sooner or later outweighs human intelligence. For some, what Albania is doing now is an exciting experiment in digitalization. But for others, it could also be a political signal with questionable practical value.
What's certain is that Albania has set an international precedent with Diera. Whether AI can indeed ultimately strengthen its trust in politics can be closely monitored, far beyond the borders of the country. Of course, we follow this with interest.
