  • Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said AI has yet to change most people's lives.

There have been many predictions made about how AI will change the world, but if AI hasn't impacted your life yet, you're not alone.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky believes this will happen within the next two to three years.

Chesky told CNBC at the Aspen Ideas Festival that despite the high expectations for AI with the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022, the apps and products people use every day have yet to truly change or transform.

“If you pick up your phone and look at all the apps on your home screen, they're all pretty much the same,” Chesky said. “So AI isn't really changing our daily lives. It's capturing our imagination and scaring us a little bit, but it's not changing the apps.”

Airbnb's co-founder said its AI capabilities haven't yet reached “the last 10% where all the benefits come from.”

While most tech companies are still announcing their future projects, and Airbnb itself has plans to leverage AI after recently acquiring an AI startup from the co-founder of Siri, actual product development is still in the early stages.

For now, the introduction of AI has introduced relatively minor improvements like dedicated chatbots and customer service tools, but system-level integration is on the way too: Apple Intelligence, which will roll out later this year, can proofread your emails or quickly calculate what time you need to leave home to pick up a friend at the airport.

But Chesky said he expects the look of apps in general to change significantly within the next two to three years.

“We'll see some progress next year and then a big leap by 2026,” Chesky said.

The Airbnb co-founder has made similar statements in the past.

“Pick up your phone and look at all the icons on your phone. Most of those apps haven't fundamentally changed since the advent of generative AI,” he told investors during Airbnb's fourth-quarter earnings call.

But don't expect it to stay that way.
