The ACC Operations Directorate (ACC/A3) launched a first-of-its-kind artificial intelligence integration division on April 1 at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. The new division, named A3AI, will serve as the command’s central authority on artificial intelligence. It is tasked with establishing AI policy, validating the tools used in operations, providing training to ACC units, and synchronizing efforts with the Department of the Air Force and Department of the Army’s AI initiatives.

This activation aligns with national priorities, including America’s AI Action Plan, and directly supports the command’s focus on operationalizing emerging technologies to maintain competitive advantage.

“A few months ago, the commander of the ACC [Gen. Adrian Spain] “A3’s formal codification of the AI ​​organization as a new A staff division was an important milestone,” said Lt. Col. Toni Gray, ACC/A3’s director of AI strategy and implementation. The division will integrate overlapping efforts and accelerate the deployment of validated AI capabilities, enabling ACC to maintain its decision-making edge through responsible AI adoption across all classification domains. ”

The A3AI team has already proven its value. The team worked with the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base. [AI acceleration event] The result is an innovative data analysis tool for airmen in weather operations across the ACC. This new tool modernized the data collection process, increasing the accuracy and timeliness of operational weather analysis, reducing work time from more than 85 hours to just minutes.

This project was just the beginning for ACC/A3AI. Airmen are developing and refining new machine learning tools and operational tactics, paving the way for a new generation of air superiority. This division uses a centralized governance, decentralized execution model. This allows A3AI to set standards across the enterprise while also allowing each wing to tailor approved AI applications to specific mission requirements.
