'AI will not replace humans': Deloitte Managing Director

It is often believed that the advent of artificial intelligence will gradually reduce the number of job openings and positions, leading to an increase in unemployment. This has been a growing debate across the world. Recently, Rohit Tandon, Managing Director, AI & Data, Deloitte, shared his views on this debate. He said that while artificial intelligence will eliminate some jobs, it will also create new roles that are unpredictable as of now.

In an interview with PTI, Rohit Tandon said some people think AI will replace humans but that is not possible as humans will remain necessary throughout their lives. He added that when IT, technology and computers came along, people also feared losing their jobs. But that did not happen. Rather, technology created more jobs. He said, “AI will work with humans and replace humans…It's not just that AI will replace humans. Humans will still need to be involved.”

He said, “Think about how many jobs have been created around the world thanks to IT. The same thing will happen with artificial intelligence. It will become ubiquitous, just as it is today. Just as some of the largest supercomputers in existence today are available on your mobile phone, some of the most powerful AI algorithms will be freely available in your wallet or pocket.”

Rohit added that this is not the first time that fears have spread that some jobs will be replaced by technology and people will lose their jobs. “We have seen this before with automation companies, call centres etc. We have used technology to automate easy tasks but the harder problems will be solved by humans. This will lead to a change in jobs. AI will be replaced by AI with humans. If you look at the job pyramid, AI will start automating easy tasks which saves time. In future, people will use AI to increase their knowledge and find information quickly which will be useful to humanity,” he said in a Business Standard report.
