new delhi [India]December 30 (ANI): Artificial intelligence (AI) could add up to USD 1.7 trillion to the Indian economy by 2035, according to government estimates, positioning the technology as one of the country's strongest growth engines over the next decade.
The projections come as India ramps up public investment and policy support for AI through initiatives such as the India AI Mission, with more than Rs 13,000 crore allocated over five years to build computing infrastructure, support start-ups, develop indigenous AI models and scale up skills programmes, the government said in a year-end note on Tuesday.
The economic impact will be driven by the adoption of AI across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, financial services, education, governance, and climate services, where automation and data-driven decision-making are already improving productivity and service delivery.
India's technology sector currently employs more than 6 million people, and government data suggests that AI will create new categories of jobs while transforming existing roles, the paper said.
Industry estimates say the country's AI talent pool could more than double to more than 12.5 million professionals by 2027, reflecting growing demand for skills such as data science, AI engineering and analytics.
The government also launched a large-scale re-education effort. “According to official statistics, more than 18.5 million candidates have registered on the FutureSkills PRIME platform, and more than 3.37 billion professionals have already completed courses in AI and other emerging technologies.”
A key pillar of India's strategy is building affordable AI infrastructure. Under the IndiaAI mission, the country has increased production capacity from an initial target of 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to 38,000 GPUs, which are now available at subsidized rates to startups and researchers. Officials say this will reduce barriers to entry for innovation and accelerate domestic AI development.
The government is also focused on inclusion and is introducing AI-based tools in Indian languages to expand access to digital services. Platforms like Bbashini, a multilingual AI model funded by the Indian government, and BharatGen aim to ensure the benefits of AI extend beyond urban English-speaking users.
In a separate roadmap, NITI Aayog highlighted the potential of AI to support India's 490 million informal workers by improving access to skill acquisition, healthcare, financial services, and real-time advisory tools, especially through voice-based and mobile-first technologies. (Ani)
