AI voice clone video of Rahul Gandhi resigning goes viral online

An AI voice clone was overlaid on a video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi filing his election candidate registration, falsely claiming that he was resigning from the party.

BOOM found that claim to be false. In the original video, he is seen filing his candidature for the Lok Sabha elections from Wayanad in Kerala.

Gandhi was nominated for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Wayanad in Kerala on April 3, 2024. The Indian general election will be held in seven stages from April 19 to June 1, 2024, with vote counting to take place on June 4. In a viral video, Mr. Gandhi can be seen signing a document and reading a short statement in Hindi announcing his resignation. The statement reads in English: “I, Rahul Gandhi, am resigning from the Congress. He is tired of being a Hindu for elections. BOOM discovered that the viral video was overlaid with a fake AI-generated voice clone of Rahul Gandhi. In the original video, Gandhi submits his 2024 general election candidate nominations.

I did a reverse image search on Google using some keyframes from the viral video and found posts about X by news outlets. hinduism. The post, shared on April 3, 2024, is in line with the viral video and has the caption, “Congress leader #RahulGandi submits nomination papers to #Wayanad district collector Renu Raj on Wednesday” shared by.

Taking a cue from this caption, we conducted a search for Rahul Gandhi to file nomination for Wayanad and found a YouTube video shared by a verified handle of the Indian National Congress on April 3. The title of the video was 'Rahul Gandhi files nomination from Wayanad'.

In this video, Gandhi can be heard saying: “I, Rahul Gandhi, nominated as a candidate to fill a seat in the House of Peoples, pledge my true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India. I promised to protect my sexuality.”

There is no statement in this original video announcing Gandhi's resignation as claimed in the viral video.

BOOM also circulated the viral video through Itisaar, a deepfake analysis tool created by IIT Jodhpur and DigitID. This tool also assumed that the audio was fake.
