Panaji: The Directorate General of Transport on Thursday issued more than 400 electronic challans to traffic violators through an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled smart signaling system to be introduced from 1 June.
Of these, 315 violations were for not wearing a seatbelt, and 95 violations for riding without a helmet. He was issued seven electronic challans for motorcyclists who overloaded their motorcycles, and he was fined five motorists for using a phone while driving.
TOI had previously reported that AI cameras installed by the state government would be operational in and around Panaji from 1 June.
A day earlier, on May 31, Transport Minister Mauvin Gozinho handed over a total of 10 hand-held speed radar guns to Goa police.
These devices are equipped with high-definition cameras that automatically capture clear videos and images. High security license plate infrared technology is used to automatically recognize speeding vehicles up to 200 meters during the day and up to 100 meters at night.
“Police are undergoing training and will be provided with a second round of training over the next few days on using the equipment to understand advanced features. We are also in the process of procuring an alcohol meter and a breathalyzer.” Gozinho also called on the public to cooperate in following traffic rules and practicing road safety.
