AI makes Google engineers 10% productive, says Sundar Pichai.

AI For Business

Google is tracking how AI makes engineers more productive and is developing specific ways to measure it.

In an episode of “Lex Fridman Podcast,” which aired last week, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company is closely watching how artificial intelligence is increasing productivity among software developers.

“The most important metric, and what we carefully measure, is how much engineering speed has increased as a company because of AI,” he said. The company estimates it has seen a 10% boost so far, Pichai said.

A Google spokesman revealed to Business Insider that it will track this by measuring the increase in engineering capabilities created in hours a week from the use of AI-powered tools.

Simply put, it's about measuring how much extra time an engineer can make up for thanks to AI.

Pichai did not say whether Google expects 10% numbers to continue to increase. However, he said he hopes that the agent's ability to take action and make decisions more autonomously unlocks the “next big wave.”

Google has its own internal tools that help engineers coding. Last year, the company launched an internal coding copilot named “Goose,” who was trained in Google's technological history for 25 years, Business Insider reported earlier.

Ai Pichai said in a podcast that Google plans to hire more engineers next year. “It's also about expanding the space of opportunity for what we can do,” he said, adding that he hopes AI will remove some of the grunt work and free up time for the more enjoyable aspects of engineering.

Separately, the company tracks the amount of code generated by AI in Google's walls. This is clearly an increasing number.

Pichai said in the meantime. Alphabet's latest revenue Calls that over 30% of the company's new code is generated by AI. From the estimated 25% in October.

Google is not the only one. Speaking at London Tech Week on Monday, Microsoft UK CEO Darren Hardman said that Github Copilot Coding Assistant has written 40% of the code to the company, saying, “We are now able to launch more products in the last 12 months than in the last three years.”

He added: “It's not just speed.”

In April, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicted that AI could handle half of Meta's developer work within a year.
