An artificial intelligence lobbying group launched a public relations campaign on Thursday to paint a more positive picture of artistic uses of the technology.
A new “Generate and Create” campaign from tech industry coalition the Chamber of Progress aims to show artists how they can use technology to improve their work and “combat growing copyright legal and policy threats to generative artificial intelligence,” the group said in a statement.
Chamber of Progress' members include some of the tech industry's largest companies, including Amazon, Apple, Google, Intuit and Meta.
The campaign is based on five principles, including the idea that generative AI will have a positive impact on creativity and lower the barrier to producing artistic works. More controversially, the campaign is based on the idea that generative AI is “generally subject to fair use protection under existing copyright law” and that “extending copyright protection to styles and ideas would stifle the creative process of works created with meaningful human involvement.”
The campaign comes about two weeks after OpenAI voluntarily removed the audio for its personal assistant Sky after actress Scarlett Johansson claimed it imitated her voice, and as OpenAI is defending itself against multiple lawsuits filed on behalf of authors and newspapers alleging copyright infringement.
Generate and Create used AI to create a mascot called Arty Fish, which was generated through their Midjourney program. The campaign also features an AI-generated song of the same name, created by text-to-music generator Suno, whose lyrics encourage listeners to “open your mind” and “set your mind free.”
