artificial intelligence: A type of knowledge-based decision-making demonstrated by a machine or computer. The term also refers to a field of research in which scientists seek to create machines and computer software capable of intelligent behavior.
average: Term (in science) for arithmetic mean. The sum of a number group divided by the size of the group.
action: the way something, often a person or other living thing, acts towards others or acts itself.
computer model: A program running on a computer that creates a model or simulation of real-world features, phenomena, or events.
data: Facts and/or statistics collected together for analysis. They are not necessarily organized in a way that gives them meaning. For digital information (the type stored by computers), these data are typically numbers stored in binary code and represented as strings of 0's and 1's.
information: (as opposed to data) A fact provided or a learned trend about something or someone, often as a result of the study of data.
reinforcement: some outcome that guides the future behavior of an animal or person. When the rat presses the lever and receives a food pellet, the food pellet becomes a reinforcement of the lever press and a reward that teaches the rat to press the lever again.
reinforcement learning: An approach to education in which an animal or person learns to perform a specific task to achieve a desired reward.
robot: A machine that can sense its environment, process information, and respond with specific actions. Some robots can operate without human input, while others are guided by humans.
strategy: A thoughtful and clever plan to achieve a difficult or challenging goal.
system: A network of parts that work together to accomplish some function. For example, blood, blood vessels, and the heart are the main components of the human body's circulatory system. Similarly, trains, platforms, tracks, road signals, and elevated tracks are among the potential components of a country's railway system. Systems can also apply to processes and ideas that are part of a method or ordered sequence of steps for completing a task.
tool: An object made or obtained by humans or other animals that they use to accomplish some purpose, such as accessing food, defending themselves, or grooming themselves.
