BENGALURU: With generative AI creating huge excitement across industries, the demand for professionals skilled in AI and machine learning (ML) is surging in India. Since the pandemic, hiring for AI and ML talent has increased by 30% annually, while demand for other digital skills has increased by half that rate, according to staffing firm Randstad. It is estimated that there are around 200,000 AI/ML professionals in India.

Rohit Kishore, head of global delivery and talent at Randstad, said the growing relevance of Gen AI is creating new roles and organizations are looking to put AI and ML at the core of their digital transformation journeys. He said he is always working hard. Several implementations have demonstrated that AI/ML can automate many processes and significantly help improve human productivity.

Jung Bahadur, director of talent solutions at professional services firm Aon, said global capability centers (GCCs) of multinational companies in India are driving increased demand for AI and ML-related roles. GCC is the technology and shared services arm of a multinational corporation. More and more GCCs are being set up in India, and new GCCs are coming in to leverage India's technology talent to support their parent companies' digital transformation. “Even traditional companies now want to go digital, and AI/ML is a key element in doing so. These companies are moving beyond industries such as healthcare and manufacturing. That’s the difference now,” Bahadur said.

Aon data shows that AI and ML roles pay significantly more than most other roles, with product companies paying the most. Salaries for those with 0-5 years of AI/ML experience in IT services companies range from Rs 1.4 million to Rs 18 million, in GCC from Rs 16 million to Rs 20 million, and in India from Rs 22 million to Rs 26 million. product company. With the same experience level, salaries for other digital technology jobs range from INR 800,000 to INR 22,000,000.

For those with 10-15 years of AI/ML experience, the salary ranges from Rs 44 million to Rs 96 million. Bahadur said salary increases for AI/ML specialists are expected to be 12.5% ​​this year, compared to 9% for other companies in India. HR solutions firm Teamlease said AI and ML roles will command a 10-15% salary premium. than other technical roles. In some cases, insurance premiums can go up to 50%.

Krishna Vij, head of business at Teamlease, said at least 12 new roles have emerged in the AI/ML space. At entry level, roles include chatbot developer and prompt engineer. At the intermediate to advanced level, roles include AI ethics specialist and robotics engineer. In education technology, roles include AI curriculum developer and AI learning architect.

Vij added that upskilling existing talent will help fill some of these roles. For example, an IT security specialist could become an AI security specialist.
