BENGALURU: With generative AI creating huge excitement across industries, the demand for professionals skilled in AI and machine learning (ML) is surging in India. Employment agency Randstad says AI and machine learning recruitment has increased by 30% annually since the pandemic, while demand for other digital skills has increased by half that rate. It is estimated that there are around 200,000 AI/ML professionals in India.
Rohit Kishore, head of global delivery and talent at Randstad, says the growing relevance of Gen AI is creating new roles and organizations are looking to put AI and ML at the core of their digital transformation efforts. He says he is always trying. Several implementations have demonstrated that AI/ML can automate many processes and significantly help improve human productivity.
Jung Bahadur, director of talent solutions at professional services firm Aon, says global capability centers (GCCs) at multinational companies in India are driving increased demand for AI and ML-related roles. GCC is the technology and shared services arm of a multinational corporation. More and more GCCs are being set up in India, and new GCCs are coming in to leverage India's technology talent to support their parent companies' digital transformation. “Even traditional companies now want to go digital, and for that, he said, AI/ML will be a key element. That’s the difference between 2021 and now,” Bahadur said.
Aon data shows that AI and ML roles pay significantly more than most other roles, with product companies paying the most. An annual salary for someone with 0-5 years of AI/ML experience in IT services companies is between Rs 1.4 million and Rs 18 million, in GCC between Rs 16 million and Rs 20 million, and in product companies between Rs 20 million . 2.2 million rupees and 26 million rupees. With the same experience level, salaries for other digital technology jobs range from INR 800,000 to INR 22,000,000.
If you have 10-15 years of AI/ML experience, your salary will range from Rs 44 million to Rs 96 million. Bahadur said this year's salary increase for AI/ML specialists is expected to be 12.5%, while for other companies in India he is expected to see 9%. HR solutions company Teamlease says AI and ML roles have a pay premium of 10% to 10%. 15% higher than other technical jobs. In some cases, insurance premiums can go up to 50%.
Krishna Vij, head of business at Teamlease, says at least 12 new roles have emerged in the AI/ML space. At entry level, roles include chatbot developer and prompt engineer. At the intermediate to advanced level, roles include AI ethics specialist and robotics engineer. In education technology, roles include AI curriculum developer and AI learning architect. Vij says upskilling existing talent could help fill some of these roles. For example, a manufacturing engineer might become an automation specialist or a robotics engineer. An IT security specialist could become an AI security specialist.
Aon's Bahadur says employers are preferring people with domain or field knowledge over people who have just completed an AI/ML course.
