UNSW is entering the next stage of its AI journey, with the rollout of AI support tools underway.

The deployment of OpenAI ChatGPT Edu and other approved AI tools for fixed-term and ongoing staff is a major milestone. This is the beginning of enabling you to use AI support tools confidently, ethically and responsibly.

“AI is not just for tech enthusiasts, it’s for all of us,” said Dr Christine Burns, Chief Information Officer at UNSW.

“We are deploying these tools to enhance and support the way we work, learn, research, and collaborate, with a focus on ethics, data protection, and academic integrity.”

How we got here

From 2024 to 2025, UNSW led one of the most comprehensive AI pilot programs in higher education. Staff across the department tested tools like Copilot and ChatGPT to help shape how AI supports our work safely, ethically, and effectively.

A consistent theme emerged from both pilots. It means staff are confident in using AI responsibly and recognize the importance of ongoing training, governance, and support.

Based on these insights, UNSW’s IT department is now releasing licenses to its staff population to support the development of skills and confidence in practical use. One of the first rollouts of its kind in Australian higher education, this phase will also help us better understand patterns of use, adoption and impact across universities.
