GANDHINAGAR: The state government is launching a pilot project in Ahmedabad to link surveillance camera footage of stray cows with artificial intelligence (AI) models to identify stray cows and track their owners in real-time. The AI Center of Excellence commissioned an institution to develop a model.According to an official statement, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is currently using a CCTV camera network to capture images of cows and identifying them using microchips and RFID tags. This manual process consumes a lot of time and energy. Efforts are underway to introduce AI technology to speed up this work.“The AI Center of Excellence at GIFT City in Gandhinagar has approached an institution to develop an AI model. The agency presented several proposals to solve this problem through deep learning models. “The model integrates images taken by CCTV cameras with an AI model to identify cows and their owners in real time,” the statement said.A computer vision deep learning model scans the cow’s face based primarily on the unique pattern of the cow’s nose. The researchers also plan to record distinctive markings and scars around the eyes and face and match the animals against a database to identify their owners. Around 110,000 cows in Ahmedabad are fitted with RFID tags and microchips, the database of which is maintained by the AMC. Cameras at 130 city intersections are taking photos of stray cattle as part of a government plan to curb cow-related accidents, improve public safety and create a data-driven surveillance system, the statement said.
