Artificial intelligence (AI) has committed to revolutionizing the field of education. But how do students and teachers actually use it today? Our recent article sensed to answer this question by analysis AI's integration into universities from two perspectives: scientific (how it is actually being used) and social (perceptions of its use).
Personalization, Virtual Tutor, Administrator
Individualized tutoring systems are for a different purpose. These are chatbots or virtual assistants who interact with students in the same way as human tutors. Their typical functions are to answer questions about content, proposal exercises, give explanations, solve problems step by step, motivation and attend the student in their progress.
All of these platforms use machine learning models that recognize the pros and cons of students. This technology is already being used successfully in disciplines such as medicine, electronics and linguistics, where large-scale data analysis and automation are essential for teaching and research.

Limitations and challenges
Despite the expectations surrounding AI, the impact on university education remains modest. Globally, university use is still in its early stages, and AI adoption varies widely across regions and sectors. While significant progress has been made in some areas, such as health sciences, other areas like the humans are only just beginning to explore the possibilities of this technology.
One of the main challenges is the lack of training for teachers and administrators in the use of AI tools. Many teachers do not have the skills necessary to integrate them into the classroom. This limits adoption. Furthermore, the lack of a clear policy regarding the privacy of student data and the ethical use of this technology poses a major barrier.

Europe is behind
There are exceptions, including the UK, which has very solid research on the ethics of educational AI and adaptive teaching models and automatic assessment.In Germany and the Netherlands, European Union interdisciplinary projects also combine education, cognitive science and computer science.
The United States is leading the development of science publications, patents and AI-based educational technologies. Large national investment in “smart education” is part of a leadership strategy in AI.
Latin America (especially Brazil, Chile, and Mexico) also has a growing research output, with advances in adaptive education platforms and learning data analysis. Interest is growing in using this technology to reduce education gaps and improve access in underprivileged regions.
