Okay, y'all: I'm taking it small My generative skeptic kernel gives a bit of credibility where it's due. Finally, I have inspired something for the actual labour that controls.
It's not something that generates revenue or a magic wand that boosts productivity, but rather a fun little newcomer: Workslop.
For beginners, this is a buzzword after Harvard Business Review published a study from Stanford and Betterup Labs this week, detailing the trend of research generated by meaningless AI “masquerading productivity” and “lacking real substances.”
Workslop is captivating it looks Like some sort of finished product from white-collar work, but in reality it's just Gobbledygook.
Like Shrimp Jesus or the big-eyed crying cat that clogs your social food, Green of human craftsmanship. Think of Slick PowerPoint, official reports containing polysyllable bits of Jargon, and lines of computer code that look like available code. But then, people who understand the actual work remain scratched when the project “has no substance that will move a particular task meaningfully forward.”
Some people use AI tools to “honest a good job,” while others use them to “create content on projects that are actually useless, incomplete, or missing,” the researchers write.
Naturally, that means more work for someone else to fix it. Of the 1,150 US-based employee researchers surveyed across a variety of industries, 40% reported receiving worklops last month.
One director who works in retail told researchers: “I had to waste time following up on the information and checking it in my research. Then I had to waste more on setting up meetings with other supervisors to address the issue. Then I kept wasting the need to start work again on my own.”
This is not just a nuisance to those receiving the Workslop. In reality, it costs money from the company. Employees reported that they spent an average of nearly two hours dealing with each instance of Workslop. The researchers calculated that these cases amounted to an “invisible tax” of $186 per month, based on participants' self-reported salaries. For a 10,000-person company, they estimated that Worksrop would cost over $9 million a year to reduce productivity.
So, in summary, not only does AI tools fail to increase the revenues of companies that employ them (as recent MIT research found), but on the contrary, it appears that companies are like that. Losing Money for them.
It's not what you want to see when our entire economy is at great risk to businesses and investors who have poured previously immeasurable amounts into technology.
In the HBR report, researchers wrote that the “insid effect” of Workslop is to “change the burden of downstream work.” And, although that's not wrong, it's almost not enough. You'll need to spend the day punching a cheesy slide deck.
However, there is a deeper fear that arises from the hardships of Workslop. We do so in a cultural moment when Corporate America's Titan doesn't seem to stop talking about how powerful technology is.

So, when you save a few hours and ask ChatGpt or Claude or Gemini to write a report, what should you say to an office associate who is working well enough to cover their rent? It was meant to do all the work you do anyway, but you could add a layer of AI fairy dust to justify subscription costs and tell shareholders who are adopting AI, but obviously you need to fact-check everything it spits out.
Workslop is the inevitable (and avoidable) outcome of companies blindly adopting tools that don't work, simply because a handful of Silicon Valley billionaires have declared that chatbots are building them at the same time as the next internet. Literal bunker The end time.
AI companies have yet to output products that can completely replace human workers, but they have already laid a rhetorical foundation to blame humans when bots fail to make their businesses more productive.
Openai CEO Sam Altman avoids being pinned down to use cases for his product, often focusing on the idea that we, people, think boldly, use AI to create their next killer app.
“I just do it,” Altman said at the industry summit in June. “When things are changing rapidly, the companies with the fastest recruitment speeds will win.”
Just do it.
