In Silicon Valley, AI is fueling the rise of star individual contributors.
Let’s take a look at what happened after The Browser Company was acquired by Anthropic. The browser startup’s CEO Josh Miller recently explained how Anthropic’s Claude Code has fundamentally changed its hiring strategy.
His post highlights how many creative organizations struggle to make a name for themselves. This means there is a huge, underserved group of very senior designer ICs who want to be close to work, mentor others, and shape direction without becoming full-time HR managers. The “design producer” role he describes feels like a reliable answer to that gap.
AI-native tools like Claude Code make this role newly possible. Advanced IC usage changes as designers can create prototypes, ship code, and explore ideas directly. Their value is not in people management. Instead, it’s about good sense, judgment, and the ability to help others move faster and achieve higher goals. Coaching is integrated into the work itself.
The record label metaphor applies well here. Rather than managing a band through an organizational chart, a good music producer creates the conditions for great work, provides feedback at the right time, and connects the right collaborators.
For experienced technical designers who have pushed the limits of traditional IC tracks, this feels less like a consolation prize and more like a brand new lane.
Think of this like the Rick Rubins army of nerds. Coincidentally, Rubin created a digital book with Anthropic last year called The Way of Code. Below is a passage from that book.
Vibe Coder supports:
inside rather than outside.
God allows things to come and go.
His heart is open as the sky.
I couldn’t agree more!
