AI chatbots for health: How to use them safely and effectively

Applications of AI

The use of augmented intelligence (AI) chatbots by patients for medical questions continues to increase, with associated potential risks to patient safety and clinical integrity. The AMA is calling on federal lawmakers to create stronger safeguards to ensure that AI tools such as chatbots complement, rather than replace, clinical guidance from doctors.

Once patients understand the limitations and risks of using AI chatbots, these tools can provide complementary medical information with appropriate prompts. It is important for patients to remember that these tools are not a substitute for a doctor and are not meant to be used in medical emergencies. There are also risks in sharing personal and personal information, as privacy protections for chatbots may be different than for a doctor’s practice.

AMA exists to help patients obtain medical information in a safe and effective manner using AI chatbots. Get started with these helpful prompts.
