Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of machines to exhibit human-like intelligence. Easier said than done!? But the question is whether it will be a 9-day wonder or a total loss.
AI is said to be the way to the future. Globally, it has contributed significantly to socioeconomic growth. Pakistan has a lot of potential for AI that can be harnessed to solve local problems such as industry, agriculture, governance and climate change. In this connection, the Government of Pakistan established the National Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) in 2018 as a technical initiative. Pakistan needs to further develop the AI sector. Like any technology, AI has both positive and negative sides that can be exploited.
The practical application of artificial intelligence demonstrates both. The benefits of various human businesses, such as manufacturing and healthcare, and the risks associated with job losses and unknown impacts from AI development. Introduced in 1956, the technology has survived several transformations over the years, including skepticism about its capabilities and the lack of suitable hardware to support the work of AI.
The current stage of AI development is innovation, and various AI algorithms are currently being introduced. While it is true that AI has the ability to automate some functions currently performed by humans, it is questionable whether humans will eventually be completely replaced by AI. AI is designed to perform specific tasks with high levels of efficiency and accuracy, but lacks the creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence that humans have.
Instead, AI could complement human skills and abilities, enabling humans to focus on more complex and advanced tasks that require creativity, intuition, and emotional intelligence. For example, in manufacturing, AI can perform repetitive tasks such as assembly and quality control, while human workers can focus on tasks that require problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Additionally, AI development and deployment relies on human decision-making and oversight. AI systems must be programmed and trained by humans, and their results and impact monitored and evaluated by humans to ensure they are ethical and consistent with society’s values and priorities is needed.
It’s important to note that developing and using AI also comes with challenges and potential risks. There are concerns about the impact of AI on employment, especially in sectors such as manufacturing and transportation. There are also concerns about AI’s potential to exacerbate existing inequalities and prejudices in employment decisions and the criminal justice system.
It is therefore imperative that policy makers, business leaders and other stakeholders meet these challenges while maximizing the benefits of AI. This includes investing in AI research and development, ensuring that employees have the necessary skills to work with AI, and adopting regulations that promote transparency, accountability, and ethical use of AI. This includes creating a framework for
In conclusion, AI has the potential to transform many aspects of human activity, but is unlikely to completely replace humans in the future. Instead, AI will complement human skills and abilities, allowing us to focus on higher-level thinking and decision-making. However, to ensure that AI is developed and used in ways that benefit all members of society, it is important to address potential risks and challenges associated with AI. Overall, the impact of AI is beneficial to socioeconomic growth, especially in Pakistan.
