Over the past 30 days, submitting over 100 job applications and adjusting your resume and cover letter, regardless of whether the job matches your experience level or not. However, the response was consistently the same: cricket.
There are many reasons why you may not receive responses from the companies you are applying to. But more and more, artificial intelligence (AI) may play an important role in what you are experiencing. AI is used by both security job seekers and the companies that hire them. In many cases, there are inadequate consequences for all parties.
Important areas where AI can impact job hunting:
- Job seekers can use AI to create resumes tailored to a specific role, ensuring all relevant keywords from their job descriptions. However, recruiters add to this trend, allowing them to quickly detect when a resume or cover letter was generated by AI. When recruiters identify such content, they tend to ignore the application.
- Candidates using AI systems to generate resumes are done much faster than human cans. This means that the number of jobs that were used to receive 100 resumes will reach over 1,000 in a very shortened time. When this happens, recruiters are overwhelmed, and businesses shut down their role application portal.
- Companies program applicant tracking systems and other AI-driven tools to scan resumes before human recruiters see them. You may be automatically rejected by AI and your resume may never be seen by someone. Additionally, businesses often suppress the number of applicants accepting a particular search, regardless of whether their resume matches their job. If your resume is sent through any cap, it will not be considered unless you resume your search.
- AI doesn't always create the correct job description. Companies use internal AI systems to generate location profiles. Their systems are customized to reflect the terminology and styles that organizations commonly use in their business operations. For roles that are not often adopted, such as security positions, languages specific to these locations may be drawn from external AI systems. If recruiters do not regularly employ security roles, do not review output, and do not rely solely on AI to generate explanations, the language that describes the roles may be incorrect or meaningless.
- A widely used by job seekers, LinkedIn uses AI extensively to change the algorithms recruiters use on their sites. Recruiters who post to job slots attached to company pages are not based on recruiter selection, but can screen for positives and negatives for various candidates based solely on LinkedIn. These options are significantly limited in terms of skills and capabilities in the security industry. Your professional security industry experience may be underrated or absent in LinkedIn's database.
- LinkedIn also uses AI to surface potential recruiters. When recruiters post jobs to job slots, LinkedIn's AI system instantly offers all candidates in the database that meet their requirements based on a constantly changing algorithm that takes into account many different factors. For example, posting a position in a LinkedIn job slot is generally available immediately between 1000 and 2000 “ideal candidates.” LinkedIn's security categories are limited. Therefore, AI responses are often violently out of the target.
- If the recruiter posts a job list to LinkedIn that is not in the job slot, the recruiter relies on its followers to respond to the job after seeing it in the feed. LinkedIn's AI algorithm determines which posts are displayed and what they are displayed. If you have thousands of posts in your feed, you won't see the security jobs that are right for you.
- LinkedIn, actually, if you create profiles on a platform like Glassdoor, the AI algorithms these services use correspond to the work you think are consistent. Again, if these providers' databases do not contain specialized security capabilities, they will not submit the job they are looking for.
Using AI is a double-edged sword for both job seekers and the companies that are trying to hire them. The irreplaceable aid appearance may turn out to be handicap. There is no alternative to using your own efforts and judgment when searching for your next security job.
