Zoho bets on embedded scope agents who behave like digital employees, not copilots without context.

In a hurry to deploy AI, many companies are experimenting with tools that sound impressive but cannot provide sustainable value. It is less clear than the ambiguity surrounding the term “agent.”

Throughout the technology sector, “agents” have become a catch-all that applies to everything from natural language chatbots to generic capillots.

Zoho has taken a stronger stance.

Through the Zia platform, software companies are building a defined class of AI agents aimed at operating within a real business with clear roles, limited scope and measurable results.

According to the Managing Director of Zoho Canada Chandrashekar Lalapet Srinivas Prasanna, AI agents have three critical traits that are useful and sustainable: specificity, accountability and interoperability.

“Many repetitive tasks can be simplified with software,” LSP said. “But Agent AI takes it to the next level.”

Do one thing

Zoho doesn't believe in general-purpose agents. Each of its Zia agents is designed to do one thing well based on the context of a particular business function.

Whether you manage churn, track account activity, or summarise customer interactions, Zoho agents are designed to act with minimal user input rather than simply responding.

“These are very business-specific agents,” LSP said. This automates the tasks your business is already doing. “What's important here is not the direction. What's important here is the business context.”

For Zoho's Canadian customers like Chris Rickett, the principal of local options, its ability to work within real-world processes makes technology useful.

“Municipalities need AI to cut red tape and connect dots. This is using systems, departments and data,” Rickett said. “From permissions to license renewals, Zoho's AI agents can collectively reduce latency and better unlock data.”

I'll make it a governess

Specificity doesn't work without Guardrails. Within each Zoho directory system created by each Zia agent Zoho, it is assigned a unique ID just like a human user. That identity governs what an agent can access, where it can act, and what its output touches.

“You really have to treat your agent as an individual with permission and access,” LSP said. “It's a very important piece of work, and many people are missing.”

He likens Zia's agents to “digital employees.” Because it must be auditable, not because they are intended to replace people. “They need permission and access control,” he added. “It doesn't exist today. That's part of what we're focusing on.”

Due to the lack of a secure and compliant solution in place, public agencies such as local governments run the risk of handing over data to third parties without supervision.

“Zoho's internal AI will help governments move forward with a safer path and enable innovation while protecting data sovereignty,” added Rickett. “It's wise recruitment and responsible governance is acting.”

Connect the dots

Even well-defined agents can be lax if they work alone. Today, most companies run a patchwork of software tools. Each one has its own Silread Intelligence, and it claims that LSPs are strictly limiting what agents can do.

“Unless you connect the dots, there's no point,” he said. “Independent systems that say they have agent AI without context is not a consequence.”

Zoho's strategy relies on a fully integrated stack, spanning over 60 apps across customer relationship management, HR, finance, communications and operations. Zia agents are already native and need not patch their environment.

“We've always believed in an integrated business operating system,” he said. “AI is not a groundbreaking thing for Zoho. It's just cherry blossoms.”

Wire it for work

Zoho embeds agents directly into the software. This will allow them to fit the work that is already happening. Each is tailored to the actual context-based task and can act with minimal friction.

AI is not at the heart of its product suite, as LSPs see. This is an extra layer that is carefully applied and can be improved without interfering with the rhythm of daily work.

“The most beautiful AI is when you don't realize that AI is doing things,” LSP said.
