Software giant Adobe has announced major updates to its AI-powered video generation app Firefly, adding prompt-based video editing tools and expanding support for third-party image and video models. This change changes the way creators work with AI-generated videos, moving Firefly beyond simple generation to more precise and flexible editing.
Previously, Firefly only allowed users to generate videos from text prompts. Even small changes required recreating the entire clip from scratch. With the new update, Firefly introduces a dedicated video editor that allows users to adjust existing clips using text instructions. Creators can now adjust elements such as color, lighting, camera angles, and composition without having to start over.
A new timeline view has also been added, giving users more control over frames, audio, and other visual characteristics.
Adobe first rolled out the video editor in private beta in October, and the feature is now rolling out to all users.
The company says the editor supports very specific instructions when used with Runway's Aleph model. Users can issue commands like turning the sky cloudy, reducing contrast, or zooming in on a subject slightly, and Firefly applies those edits directly to the video.
New features have also been added to Adobe's own Firefly Video model. Users can first upload a starting frame along with a reference video showing a particular camera movement, and then ask Firefly to recreate that camera movement in their own clips. This allows for more consistent visual storytelling and easier replication of complex camerawork.

Alongside the editing improvements, Adobe is expanding Firefly's model ecosystem. Support for Topaz Labs' Astra model allows users to upscale videos to 1080p or 4K, addressing one of the most common post-production needs. Black Forest Labs' FLUX.2 image generation model has also been added to Firefly, bringing new options for creating high-quality images. Adobe has announced that FLUX.2 will soon be available across the Firefly platform and will be accessible to Adobe Express users starting in January.
The update comes amid increasing competition in AI image and video generation. To encourage broader adoption, Adobe announced that Firefly Pro, Firefly Premium, and higher credit plan subscribers will receive unlimited generations from all image models and Adobe Firefly video models within the Firefly app until January 15th.
The company introduced a new subscription tier in February, launched a redesigned Firefly web app, expanded to mobile, and steadily added support for third-party models. With prompt-based video editing and a wide range of models, Adobe is positioning Firefly as more of a complete creative platform than just a generation tool.
