Adobe announced on Friday, December 19, a multi-year strategic partnership with Runway, an AI video startup, to develop and deliver advanced generated video capabilities for creators, brands, and studios. Runway integrates the latest and most advanced video generation models into Adobe's creative ecosystem. The collaboration is marked by early access to Runway's new Gen-4.5 models in the Adobe FireFly app.

“As AI transforms video production, professionals are turning to Adobe's creative ecosystem, from Firefly to Premiere to After Effects, to imagine, craft, and scale their stories across every screen,” said Ely Greenfield, Adobe's chief technology officer and senior vice president of digital media.

“Combining Runway's generative video innovation with Adobe's trusted professional workflows will help creators and brands expand their creative possibilities and meet the growing demands of modern content and media production.”

The deal also makes Adobe Runway's preferred API creative partner, giving Adobe customers access to Runway's latest video models long before their public release. The companies will also jointly develop specialized AI video capabilities available only within Adobe applications, starting with Firefly, the company's all-in-one generative AI studio.

The software giant said the partnership aims to make generative video a trusted part of professional video workflows, especially as demand for short-form, social, streaming and branded content increases. The companies also plan to work closely with independent filmmakers, major studios, agencies, streaming platforms, and large corporations to integrate these tools into real-world production pipelines.

Firefly users now have access to the Gen-4.5 model of Runway ahead of Runway's wider rollout. The AI ​​company claims the new model offers enhanced motion, stronger instant compliance, and higher visual fidelity. All of this allows creators to generate complex scenes with consistent characters, realistic physics, and consistent movement throughout the shot. Users can generate video clips from text prompts, experiment with pacing and visual style, then adjust the output using Firefly's video editor.

Additionally, generated content can also be transferred to Adobe Creative Cloud applications like Premiere Pro and After Effects for further editing, compositing, and finishing, allowing AI-generated footage to sit alongside traditional video assets in professional workflows.

Cristóbal Valenzuela, co-founder and CEO of Runway, said the partnership will bring the company's latest generated video technology to a broader range of storytellers by incorporating it directly into tools already used in the creative industry.

This partnership also strengthens Adobe Firefly's position as a multi-model generative AI platform. In addition to Adobe's own commercially secure Firefly models, users have access to partner models from companies like Runway, Google, OpenAI, Luma AI, ElevenLabs, and Black Forest Labs, as well as custom models trained in creators' unique styles.
