As part of a digital offering for tennis fans, The All England Lawn Tennis Club will employ generative AI from IBM Watson to produce commentary for men’s and women’s singles matches featured on the app and Wimbledon.com. .
According to IBM, the AI commentary feature provides fans watching match highlight videos with audio commentary and captions for key moments and can be toggled on and off.
The tool is designed to give fans a more insightful experience as they capture key match moments with the Wimbledon app and highlight videos on wimbledon.com.
The company added that this year’s introduction is a step towards making commentary available in exciting ways for matches outside of Wimbledon’s show court, which already has live human commentary.
To develop this new capability, experts from IBM iX, an experience design partner within IBM Consulting, worked with the All England Club to leverage underlying models from IBM’s enterprise AI and data platform, watsonx. , trained an AI in its own language, tennis.
It applied generative AI built on the underlying model to generate narrations with different sentence structures and vocabularies, making the clips informative and engaging, IBM added.
Usama Al-Kassab, Marketing and Commercial Director of The All England Club said: “We continue to innovate with our partners at IBM to deliver an insightful and engaging digital championship experience for Wimbledon fans anywhere in the world. We are introducing new features to our digital platform using our latest AI technology to give fans even more insight into singles draws and access to various match commentary through match highlight videos.”
Seeing how the PGA experimented with its AI-generated commentary earlier this year, one Twitter follower thinks it still has work to do before it’s ready for prime time.
If you’ve seen stories on Wimbledon’s app or website about adding AI commentary to video highlights rather than having actual commentators, IBM tried to do the same at the Masters Golf earlier this year. Can you feel the passion? pic.twitter.com/HuUizbkASEJune 21, 2023
