HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — If you’re having a hard time finding a job, your computer may be keeping you from making a good impression.
Artificial intelligence is not only impacting jobs, but also how people get those jobs, experts said, adding that more employers are leveraging artificial intelligence in the hiring process.
Even if you work with computers, experts say there are ways to use the human element to stand out. A study by Resume Writer found that over 80% of employers use artificial intelligence to read resumes.
The report also found that companies are using the technology to evaluate candidates, scan social media, and interact with chatbots. Juliet Stipeche, executive director of Workforce Solutions, said that even though you’re working with a computer, you want to treat it like a human.
“People are going to have to learn how to handle themselves,” Stipesh explained. “Wear nice clothes and make eye contact, because the AI looks at the soft skills of how they interact.”
Soft skills can also impact getting a job. The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas recently investigated how AI is impacting jobs in Texas.
I learned that if you emphasize how you communicate, make eye contact, and use good judgment, you can make a difference.
“Working on your soft skills will make you a more attractive candidate for jobs, especially in fields that use AI a lot. AI can take all the technical tasks off your shoulders and allow you to spend more time building relationships,” explained Anna Crockett, senior outreach advisor for community engagement and development at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.
Experts said AI can also be used by candidates to create resumes.
“I always tell people to write the first draft in their own words,” Stipeche explained. “Let the AI refine your voice so it sounds like you.”
You can also go further. They say this technology can help you prepare for interviews.
“When you ask AI, it can give you some targeted questions that are customized to the employer and the job posting, so you can almost pre-screen and practice at home with your family,” Stipeche said.
Employers are not fully leveraging AI in the hiring process. In fact, several employers will be conducting on-the-spot interviews at the latest ABC13 Who’s Hiring Job Fair with Workforce Solutions.
This event will be held at Lone Star College’s Montgomery Campus in Conroe. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Employers primarily in the healthcare and biomedical industries will participate.
